When I first started my business, branding wasn’t a priority.

I was focused on getting clients and figuring out how to run a business.

I knew what it was, I just didn't think it was important.

And because I didn't focus on branding, I also wasn't focusing on growing an audience.

This stunted my business' growth in its first year.

Thankfully, I learned my lesson and really put in the effort to create a brand that aligns with my content and passions.

So now that I've put effort into branding, I fully understand what it means to build a recognizable business.

How to Build a Brand For Your Business

One thing I’ve realized is that, just like a business plan, branding is part of your business' foundation.

Pretty much everything else in your business needs those two things to be successful.

A business plan gives you structure and direction, but branding gives you identity.

It’s what makes people remember you.

No matter what you offer, whether it's selling products or services, you want your business to be memorable.

Branding helps your business stick in people’s minds so that, when they need what you offer, they think of you.

Let’s talk about what goes into building a personal brand, how to make it unique to you, and how to make it memorable.

What does it mean to "Build a Brand"?

It’s way more than just choosing a logo or picking some pretty colours!

Your brand is how people generally perceive your business.

It’s how they feel when they come across your website, read your content, see your products, or watch you on social media.

Think of it kind of like the personality of your business.

Branding is about creating a unique identity for your business.

It’s your visuals, your voice, your messaging, and even your values coming together to create your brand.

When all of these elements align, that’s when people start to recognize and remember your brand.

It’s what makes you stand out from the thousands of other online businesses offering similar things.

Branding Your Face and Name vs. Branding Your Products and Content

One of the first things you’ll need to decide is whether you will be the face of your business, or your products and content.

This is a big decision because it changes things like your website and marketing strategy.

If you choose to brand your business around yourself, it means your name and face will be associated with everything you do.

People will follow you because they feel connected to you as a person.

This can be very powerful because people love connecting with other people, and building a personal brand can create a deeper connection between you and your audience.

The other option is to focus your branding around your products or content.

People will connect with your ideas, your products, or your content, rather than with you personally.

With this, your name and face aren't in the big picture, but it still lets you to build a brand that resonates with people.

There’s no right or wrong choice here.

It really depends on what you feel more comfortable with and how you want to engage with your audience.

I want to say one thing before ending this section.

I have always recommended to clients that they brand themselves instead of having a faceless brand because of the connection it gives you with your audience.

To them, no matter whether they're looking at your content or buying a product, they are aware it was made by a person. You.

It makes everything you do feel much more personal because they are associating it with a real human being.

But once again, it is entirely up to you!

Creating Your Brand's Visual Identity

This is definitely my favourite part to creating a brand!

It's when you choose your fonts, colours, and the overall vibe of your brand.

It seem small, but this is extremely important in making your brand recognizable.

The most important part here is consistency.

Without it, this is all pretty much pointless.

The more consistent you are, the easier it is for people to associate certain colours or fonts with your business.

Colours

The colours you choose for your brand should align with the feeling or mood you want your audience to feel when thinking of your business.

For example, do you want your brand to feel calming and approachable? Soft pastels or something earthy would be great.

Want something exciting? Bright colours.

Once you’ve decided on your main color palette, use it in everything associated with your business.

And I mean everything!

Your website, social media, emails, products, logo, and business cards.

You want people to know something is yours simply because of the colours.

Fonts

Fonts work with the same rules as colours.

They should match the vibe of your brand.

For example, a modern font gives off a completely different feeling than a playful one.

I'd suggest choosing three fonts, one for headings, one for subheadings, and one for body text, and use them consistently.

Your Brand's Voice and Message

Your brand voice is just as important as your visual identity.

It’s how you communicate with your audience, not just the words you use but the tone and style you express yourself in.

For example, are you going for something more casual? Professional? Friendly? Formal?

Your brand voice should reflect both your personality and the vibe of your business.

Because I'm a blogger, I've really had to figure out my voice and the way I want to come across.

How do I want to come across to you, my reader?

And people will recognize your tone as they see more of your content.

This helps the connection between your audience and your brand, making them feel like they’re getting to know you better with everything they see.

What Type of Content Will Your Brand be Known For?

Every strong brand has content it’s known for.

Something that when your audience thinks of your business, they think of this.

For me, it's my blog.

It's the main thing I do and it's what my audience knows me for.

But for you, this could be a signature offer, a blog, a podcast, social media posts, or YouTube videos.

For example, if you’re known for writing blog posts about growing online businesses (like me!), then your audience will expect that kind of content from you.

Or maybe you’re known for your Instagram stories where you share business tips.

Whatever it is, you also want to make sure you enjoy creating the content you make.

Think about the kind of content that you are the most passionate about and that aligns with your business.

Do you love writing? You could really enjoy blogging.

Or do you like speaking? Podcasting could be for you.

Whatever you choose, make sure your audience is also interested in it.

Changing Your Brand

One thing to remember is that your brand doesn’t have to stay exactly the same forever.

As your business grows and changes, so will your brand.

And that’s normal!

In fact, it’s a good thing.

It shows that you’re staying relevant and improving.

Maybe you started with one type of audience, but now your business has expanded and you’re targeting a different group.

Don’t be afraid to change your brand to reflect your business.

This could be things like changing your colour palette or the type of content you create.

But you need to be careful with this because you don't want to change your brand too often.

Brand evolution is a normal part of business growth, so don’t feel like you must forever stick with the branding choices you made at the very beginning.

As long as you stay with your niche and keep giving content to your audience, evolving your brand is a good thing!

Making Your Brand Recognizable and Memorable

Finally, let’s talk about how to make your brand recognizable and memorable.

Thankfully, it all comes down to one thing. Consistency.

The more consistent you are with your branding, the more your audience will start to recognize and remember you.

Think about some of the biggest brands you know.

More often than not, they're very consistent with everything they do.

They have a specific message, look, and tone of voice, and they stick to it across everything that they do.

That’s what makes them memorable.

You want to aim for that same amount of consistency.

And don’t be afraid to add your own personality into your brand!

People connect with authenticity.

Being you is a great thing when it comes to business!

Building a brand takes time, but it’s one of the best things you can do for your business.

It’s what sets you apart from the crowd.

If you’re just starting out, don’t worry if you haven’t figured everything out yet. I didn’t either!

Just take it step by step, don't be afraid to do research, and be proud of yourself for going the extra step and reading this blog post to learn how to turn your business into a brand.
