Building your own website is one of the most exciting and important parts of starting an online business.

But believe me, it isn't exactly a "simple" task.

It's the foundation of your online business, where people come to learn about you and what your business has to offer.

When I first realized how important it was, I completely redesigned my entire website to make it more user-friendly and on-brand.

It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

How to Build Your Own Business Website

If you’re thinking of starting from scratch or redesigning your own business website, don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be complicated!

I've broken the entire process down into 5 steps to guide you as you create your business website.

And if you have already completed one of these steps, that's ok!

I suggest you read it anyway as you might learn something new.

Step 1: Get Your Domain and Hosting

The first thing you’ll need to do is actually get a website up and running, meaning you need to get two things.

A domain name and hosting.

Your domain name is the web address people will use to find you, so figuring out the name of your website is extremely important!

It should be easy to spell, memorable, and on-brand.

But if you're still trying to figure out your brand name, think about your niche and the type of content you make.

Usually, a domain either matches your business name or describes what you offer.

But you can use your own name too!

If the name you choose is already taken, you can add words like “co” or “studio”.

After you have a domain name, you’ll need a hosting service to get your website online.

There are some really great platforms like Bluehost, SiteGround, Wix, or The VIP Hub (which I use because I like having everything in one place).

Do some research on each and choose the one that is the best fit for your business and your budget.

Step 2: Choose Your Colours, Pictures, and Fonts

Now that you have a website, it’s time to choose what it's going to look like.

Actually designing your website uses colours, pictures, and fonts.

If you have them already, fantastic!

But if you don't, they should reflect your brand and your own personality. You're going to be using them across everything associated with your business.

If you don't know the colours you should go for, think about your business vibe.

Your colours should represent the emotions you want your visitors to feel when they look at your website.

For pictures, quality and colours are very important!

If you can afford professional photos, great.

If not, there are lots of free stock photo websites where you can find images that match your brand.

And finally, let's talk about fonts.

Like colours, fonts should reflect the feel of your business.

For example, modern fonts work well for a professional vibe, but lively fonts could be better for creative businesses.

Step 3: Design Your Website and Pages

Once you’ve picked your colours, fonts, and images, the next step is to lay out your website.

You need to ask yourself what your site needs to do, and what pages should it include.

The basics for a business website are a homepage, an about page, a services or products page, and a contact page.

Depending on your business, you might also want to add a blog, podcast, portfolio, or testimonial page.

When planning your pages, decide what information is most important to your visitors and make sure it’s easy for them to find.

For the design part, I always suggest something easy to navigate.

That doesn't mean it has to be simple, but if there's too much going on you can overwhelm your visitors.

All of your words should be easy to read, you must have simple navigation menus, and buttons that lead people to where they need to go, like your services page or contact form.

And finally, your website needs to look good on laptops and phones.

Don't skip this!

Step 4: Write Your Copy

Your copy can make or break your site.

This is where you connect with your audience and show them why they should work with you or buy your products.

Start thinking about your target audience and what they care about, what they want, what problems they face, and how you can help solve those problems.

You want your copy to feel personal and conversational, kind of like how I’m talking with you right now.

But remember to add your personality in there too.

You're a real person, let that come across in your writing!

But if being conversational isn't on-brand, you can always change it to whatever it needs to be for you.

As you write, focus on how everything benefits them, not you.

For example, if you’re a coach, don’t just tell them what you offer. Talk about how your clients will feel after working with you or the results other clients have experienced.

Make sure every page, especially your homepage and services pages, has a call to action (CTA).

No matter what you want people to do, make it easy for them to get to the next step.

Step 5: Do Your Keyword Research and SEO

The last step is to make sure people can actually find your website.

That’s why we use search engine optimization (SEO).

If you’ve already been doing SEO for your blog or other online content, then you know the basics, but if not, that's exactly why I'm here!

Start by doing keyword research to figure out what terms your target audience is searching for when they’re looking for businesses like yours.

Once you have your keywords, add them throughout your website copy.

Focus on putting them in places like your page titles, headings, meta descriptions, and image alt text.

But don't overdo it. We're aiming for natural, not keyword stuffing.

Also, make sure your site loads quickly and is mobile-friendly.

Both of these factors can impact your ranking in search results.
