The impression a brand gives first-time visitors is one of the most important parts of a successful online business.

And that's exactly what we're talking about; your online reputation.

Simply put, your online reputation is how others perceive your business based on your online presence.

Things like your social media, blog, website, podcast, and the way you engage with your audience all decide your online reputation.

As online business owners, it's important to put a lot of effort into how we are perceived.

How Can You Build Your Online Reputation?

When I started to really focus on blogging and my business, online reputation was one of my main focuses.

I place so much weight on reputation/perception because trust is crucial in business.

People are more likely to buy from you, read your content, click a link, or book your services when they feel they know and trust you.

The other reason I like it so much is that you get to decide how your audience experiences and perceives your brand.

Brainstorm the Way You Want Your Audience to See You

Before we can start building an online reputation, we need to figure out how we want our business to be perceived.

Here are some things to ask yourself:

  • What words do I want people to associate with my brand?

  • How do I want to make my audience feel?

  • What specific niche do I want to be known for?

This is the foundation that will guide us as we build our reputation.

We need to know our "vibe" before creating anything else.

That's why I'd suggest writing a few phrases or words that describe what you're going for, such as...

  • “Helpful, creative, trustworthy”

  • “Colourful, empowering, fun”

  • “Professional, approachable, inspiring”

These words will guide you through the rest of this blog post.

Start Upgrading Your Brand

Now that we've figured out your brand’s vibe, we need to make sure it’s reflected in every part of your business.

1. Take a Look at Your Online Presence

  • Podcast: Does your tone match the vibe you're going for?

  • Blog: Do your posts align with your niche?

  • Website: Is the design clear and on-brand?

2. Look at Your Business Visually

  • Color Palette. Choose colours that give the feelings you want your audience to have. For example, I chose green because it's associated with trust, growth, and calm. I wanted my business to be a safe space for entrepreneurs to come and learn, so green was the best choice.

  • Business Photos. Use professional, but relatable images. Your photos should reflect the personality you want your brand to communicate.

3. Stay Consistent

Your tone of voice, copy and even the words you use should be consistent across all platforms.

It doesn't matter if someone reads your Instagram caption or visits your website. It should feel like the same person wrote both.
