How to Set Realistic Business Goals and Achieve Them

When I first started Umbrella Virtual Solutions, I didn’t set any goals for myself or my business.

It never hit me how much of an impact business goals could make.

I was focused on just getting things done, but I didn’t realize that without goals, I had no clear direction.

How to Set Goals For Your Business

Now I have quite a few business goals, some big and some small, guiding everything I do.

Goals help me stay focused and on track.

I love the sense of accomplishment after achieving one of them, it really motivates me to keep building my business.

If you’re not already setting business goals, that's ok, but it might be time to start!

The difference with and without goals is crazy.

Why Setting Realistic Goals Is So Important

Setting realistic goals is important for your success, no matter if they’re big or small.

If a goal is unrealistic, it can lead to frustration and make you feel like giving up.

I've been there and it's awful.

But when your goals are achievable, you’re more likely to stay motivated and see progress.

I've put a lot of time into learning how to set realistic goals: I always do a little research to see how long it usually takes others to achieve something similar.

This helps me set goals that are challenging but realistic.

For example, if I’m setting a goal to grow my monthly Pinterest views, I look at what others have achieved and how long it took. Then, I create a goal that feels doable given my timeline and resources.

What Are Small Business Goals and How Do You Create Them?

Small business goals are milestones that are manageable and usually short-term.

These goals are important because they give you quick wins that keep you motivated and moving forward.

To create small business goals, think about tasks or achievements that align with your bigger business vision.

Start with something measurable and achievable within a short timeframe.

For example:

  • Reaching 100 page views on your blog in a single day.

  • Gaining 10 new email subscribers this week.

  • Posting consistently on social media for 30 days.

These small wins build momentum and help you stay engaged with your business.

They might feel small at first, but they help you achieve your big goals in the long run.

What Are Big Business Goals and How Do You Create Them?

Big business goals are long-term objectives that shape the direction of your business.

These goals usually require more time, effort, and planning but are the ones that require the most significant growth and transformation.

To create big business goals, start by asking yourself what success looks like for you in the long run.

Then, break that vision into specific goals.

For example:

  • Generating a full-time income from your business.

  • Reaching 50,000 monthly blog page views.

  • Launching a digital product that brings in $10,000 in revenue.

Big goals might seem overwhelming at first, but they help you determine exactly what you need to work toward.

They also inspire you to dream bigger and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Planning to Achieve Your Goals

Whether your goal is big or small, having a plan is vital if you want to achieve it.

Without steps, even the most realistic goals can feel out of reach.

Here’s how I break down my goals into steps.

  1. Write the Goal Down
    Start by writing down your goal in detail. Be as specific as possible, and make sure the goal is measurable. For example, instead of “Get more blog traffic,” write “Increase blog traffic by 50% in six months.”

  2. Break It into Smaller Tasks
    Divide your goal into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, if you want to grow your email list, you might create a lead magnet, set up an email sign-up form, and promote the lead magnet on social media.

  3. Set Deadlines
    Assign a deadline to each task to stay on track. Deadlines create a sense of urgency and help you prioritize your time.

  4. Track Your Progress
    Check in on your progress often. Are you meeting your deadlines? Is there anything preventing you from achieving your goal? When you track your progress it helps you stay accountable and tells you if you need to change your plan.

  5. Celebrate!
    Don’t wait until you reach the final goal to celebrate! Reward yourself for completing small tasks or hitting small goals along the way.
