The first time I wrote a headline for a blog post I had absolutely no idea there was a science behind it.

I was just writing what I thought I'd like to click on!

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad by any means, and I was on the right path, there was just something missing...

But what?

Yeah, I had no clue.

And after a lot of experimenting, some of my earlier blog posts have been successful and others not so much.

But because I did so much experimenting with titles in my first few months of blogging, my more recent blog post titles have been doing much better.

Pretty much all of my recent blog posts have gained a good amount of visitors.

So, how exactly do I do it?

How to Write a Good Blog Post Title

When I started blogging, I didn't know which titles would get more clicks than others.

You have to wait and see the trends as you post more and more new blog posts.

Thankfully, I'm getting close to 100 blog posts and have been noticing these trends for a while now.

I finally feel like I know which blog post titles do better than others!

Naming blog posts really is one of those skills that gets better with practice.

If you've been staring at your newest draft thinking, "What do I even call this?" I have been there and believe me, it does get easier!

Allow yourself to learn and grow your skills. You'll get there!

So, let's talk about how to make a blog post title that gets clicks.

How to Know if Your Title is Too Bland or Too Much

Listen, I have seen both of these happen and neither are good.

You want a blog post title that is intriguing enough to get clicks, but without feeling over-stuffed.

For example, a bland title could be "How to Organize Your Desk."

It's not bad, but it could use something extra to better grab attention.

On the other hand, a title like "The Absolute Most Mind-Blowing Desk Organization Hacks You’ll Ever Read in Your Entire Life." has a bit too much going on.

Your readers want to know what they're getting, but if your title feels like a sales pitch or inauthentic, they could scroll right past.

A good headline is somewhere in between the two.

It's interesting but to the point.

From a glance, your readers should know the topic of your blog post.

Adding Adjectives to Make Your Titles More Interesting

Often, a bland title can be spruced up with a single word.

Truly, one word can help you stand out.

Let's use the title "How to Start a Blog." as an example. Sure it's to the point, but it's missing something.

That's when we add in some adjectives to spice things up.

For example, "How to Start a Thriving Blog" and "How to Start a Successful Blog " both use adjectives to make the text more interesting.

I mean, do you want to start a blog, or do you want to start a successful blog?

Have fun with it!

Just make sure the adjectives match the vibe of the post.

Some of my favourite adjectives for this are:

  • Successful

  • Brilliant

  • Ultimate

  • Simple

  • Easy

  • Effective

  • Maximum

  • Profitable

  • Productive

Phrases that Make Your Title Clickable

Even though adding an adjective is fantastic, I love phrases even more.

They really make things look better.

Earlier, I used the title "How to Start a Blog." as an example.

If we wanted to make it more interesting, there are a few different options.

  • ... the Simple Way

  • ... the Easy Way

  • ... the Right Way

  • ... in 10 Easy Steps

  • ... the Full Guide

  • ... a Step-By-Step Guide

  • ... from Scratch

  • ... from the Ground Up

  • ... in 1 Week

  • ... for Beginners

  • ... of Your Dreams

  • 10 Steps to...

  • 10 Tricks to...

  • 10 Tips to...

  • 10 Mistakes...

  • 10 Reasons Why...

  • Top 10...

  • What I've Learned from...

  • The Best...

Let's take some of these and see how they look with our bland example title.

"How to Start a Blog the Simple Way.", "How to Start a Blog: A Step-By-Step Guide.", and "10 Steps to Starting a Blog."

See how much more interesting they look?

Now, let's take these and add the adjective "successful" to them. We're bringing everything we've learned together!

"How to Start a Successful Blog the Simple Way.", "How to Start a Successful Blog: A Step-By-Step Guide.", and "10 Steps to Starting a Successful Blog."

We did it!

We just made 3 captivating headlines for blog posts.

Now that you have the formula, you can too!

Remember, don't be afraid to play around and find what works best for you.

For example, I sometimes have one phrase at the beginning and one phrase at the end, leaving out the adjective.

Practice. It's how you will get better!

How to Avoid Making a Title Too Extravagant

When making blog titles, there is such a thing as going overboard.

For example, a title like "10 Simple and Easy Ways to Organize Your Desk for Maximum Productivity and Keep It Clean Forever." is too much.

So, if your title is feeling a bit crowded, go back to the basics.

What is your blog post about?

What adjectives and phrases can you add to make it more interesting?

Your audience should know exactly what your blog post is about just by glancing at the title.

Keep that in mind when making your blog titles!

Is Your Title Clickable?

To get an idea of whether your blog post headline is clickable or not, I like to ask myself 2 questions.

1. Does it solve a problem your audience is facing?

Your audience is going through many things, so figure out if any of their current problems could be solved after reading your blog post.

If not, figure out whether the topic of your blog post is the problem or if your title needs a rewrite to better align with solving a problem your audience has.

For example, this blog post's title is "How to Write Captivating Headlines for Your Blog Posts."

It is made for anyone in my audience who struggles with making interesting blog post titles, and that's exactly what this title says.

2. Does it stand out against your competitors?

This is the whole point of adding adjectives and phrases.

It makes your blog post stand out in the sea of other, similar blog posts out there.

You want your title to catch someone's attention so that they don't scroll past to something else.
