If you have ever made a digital product before, you'd know that creating the product is only half the battle, getting it to sell is an entirely different story.

Maybe you're here because a product's sales aren't going so well, or maybe you're here because you're doing research before creating your product.

Whatever the reason is, welcome!

Let's go through the steps, from the beginning, on what you should do to make a product that sells.

How to Make Digital Products that Sell

Something that I see a lot of people do is look at creating a product and selling the product as two different things.

But it's not!

You should be thinking about how to sell your product from the very beginning.

And I wanted to clarify that from the very beginning because I don't want you skipping sections and thinking they aren't important in your product's sales.

The entire process is important to your product's sales.

Know Your Audience

This is the first step before ever making your product.

And that's because the people in your audience are your product's potential customers!

So of course we should understand what they're interested in, right?

Depending on your niche, your audience will be interested in different things.

For example, if your niche is fashion, your audience is interested in you because of your fashion content.

So it wouldn't make sense to create a product about how to cook a pumpkin pie.

Focus on figuring out the problems they face every day.

What do they struggle with?

What keeps them up at night?

And the product you make should be the solution to those problems.

You want to make a product they desire. It should be irresistible!

If you don't know where to start, making a customer avatar can really help you understand your audience.

It's a fictional character who represents your audience.

Give them a name, a job, hobbies, dislikes, and a list of their biggest challenges.

Think of them as you make your product!

Choose the Right Digital Product

We just talked about how not all audiences are the same, and that also goes for products.

Some audiences are going to like certain products more than others.

Make sure the product you create is the right one for the audience you have!

You need to choose a type of product that aligns with both your skills and your audience's needs.

Here are some digital product ideas.

  • Ebooks

  • Online courses

  • Templates

  • Planners

  • Journals

  • Printables

  • Memberships

Validate Your Idea

Don't skip this!

I didn't realize how important it was when I first started making digital products, and I really wish I could go back in time.

You don’t want to spend weeks (or even months) working on something only to find out no one wants it.

So, how do you validate your idea?

  • Ask your audience. If you have an email list or social media following, don't be afraid to ask them! You can create a poll, survey, quiz, or even have one-on-one conversations to get their opinions.

  • Look at competitors. See what similar products are out there and how well they’re doing. If people are buying something similar, that means there’s a demand.

  • Pre-sell your product: If you have a big enough audience, try selling your product before it’s even created. Give a discount for early buyers or a special bonus for those who pre-order. If people are willing to pay upfront, you know you’re onto something!

Create Your Digital Product

Now comes the fun part, creating your product!

But before you get started, let’s quickly talk about something.

You need to focus on quality.

This isn’t just about throwing something together.

You want those who purchased your product to keep coming back for more!

Ebook or Online Course

If you’re creating an ebook or course, planning is extremely important.

Write down the major topics you want to cover and break them down into smaller sections.

But throughout all of this, don't forget to add your personal touch!

Something like a relatable story or a little humor makes you feel more human to them, instead of just the creator of your ebook or course.

Look to form a connection, not just give information.

You can also ass checklists, worksheets, templates, or other resources to give your ebook or course more value.

Templates or Printables

Design is everything when it comes to templates or printables.

You want your product to be both functional and beautiful.

If design isn’t your thing, think about hiring a graphic designer or using something like Canva, which has a bunch of of user-friendly design options.

But keep in mind that your customers should feel like they’re getting a tool that makes their lives easier, not something that adds to their stress.

Make a Sales Page

Now that you have a product, it’s time to sell it!

Your sales page is where potential buyers go to buy your product.

That's why it's so important!

This is where you convince them that they absolutely need your product in their lives.

Here are some tips to do this.

  • Headline. Your headline should grab attention and talk about the problem your product solves. For example, “Get Organized in 7 Days with This Ultimate Planner Bundle.”

  • The benefits. Touch on what your product can do for your customer. How will it make their life easier, better, less stressful, or more enjoyable? I'd suggest using bullet points to make them clear and easy to read.

  • Testimonials. If you have any reviews or testimonials, this is where to put them. Showing your potential customers it worked for others is fantastic!

  • Solve potential problems. Think about any reasons someone might hesitate to buy and fix them before the site ever goes live. For example, if your product has a higher price, explain why it’s worth the investment.

  • Call to action. Make sure your call to action (CTA) is clear and makes them want to click. For example, “Get Instant Access” or “Grab Yours”. Make it obvious what the next step is.

Make the page more interesting with graphics of your product or even a video of you explaining your product, what it offers, and how it can solve a problem they face.

Pricing Your Product

This is where I find a lot of people, especially if they haven't made a product before, don't really know what to do.

So let's talk about how you can find a balance without the price being too high or low.

The main thing I do is research what similar products are selling for.

But please keep in mind that larger businesses tend to price theirs higher.

This doesn't mean you can't, but remember it while researching.

You don't want to underprice your product (you deserve to be paid for your hard work!), but you don't want to make it unrealistically expensive.

And don't be afraid to experiment!

You can always change your price based on sales and feedback.

Promotion

Promoting your product is one of the main ways you get sales, so it's extremely important.

I wrote an entire blog post last week that goes more in-depth about marketing your digital products, so check that out if you want more info!

But let's talk about the main things you should know about promoting your digital product.

Use Your Blog, Podcast, or Social Media

If you don't have all of these, that's more than ok!

All I mean is that you should promote it to your audience, so wherever they are is where you should market your product.

For example, if I made a product, I would use this blog to promote it because it's where my audience is.

Whatever platform you use, even if it isn't listed, use it to tell your audience about your product!

Explain how it will solve their problem, and how much fun you had making it.

It should feel like a personal message to them.

And don't only promote it once!

Promote it a few times to keep it fresh in your audience's minds.

Email Marketing

If you have an email list, now’s the time to use it.

Make a series of emails that build excitement around your product.

Remember to add a clear call to action in every email!

Once again, it's a personal message explaining how your product is the solution to a problem they have.

Partner with Influencers or Affiliates

Think about collaborating with influencers or affiliates who can help promote your product to their audiences.

This can be a great way to reach new people who might not have heard of you otherwise.

Offer them a commission on sales or a special discount code for their followers.

Keep Making it Better!

Now that your product is out in the world, it's time to figure out where you should make adjustments.

Watch your sales and where your traffic is coming from.

If something isn't working, find the problem and fix it.

Don't be afraid to change your pricing, sales page, promotion strategy, or product name.

Updating your product every once in a while is a great way to keep things fresh.
